Condolences to the beloved Alferink family. I didn't know Jerry so much, but the daughter Michelle. And she was so nice and sweet (& her brother too, as well as their friend Kathy Lawrence) back in our Calvin college days that I know her father must be a really good person. 

In fact I remember a call from Michelle when I was at work at the hospital one time and in the midst of my own grief from the loss of a loved one and she was so kind and caring about it. ThIs church was very cool the first few times I came here, but recently I've noticed they're artificially r trying to create a more mixed racial atmosphere, with certain people who wouldn't naturally be attracted to this type of church. 

And then also they've added beefy security, including one who stands on the street corner at the end of the service and looks like a wannabe FBI agent, speaking secretively into a little microphone  (probably faking it) as if assessing any possible threats .

 They've definitely made some "adjustments" recently that will eventually make them JUST LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE blah blah (if u know what I mean) instead of the special new congregation they started out as ... 

Nonetheless, I am praying and hoping for the best 🙏... maybe this will give them a heads up. I know the pressure is on, but Please DON'T ACQUIESCE to the pressure to become "politically correct " 🚫.

There's a blend of good and not-so-good here. One of the NOT so good is the old school stereotypes that still rule the nest. For example, when one of the elderly greeters saw my facial hair, I could see his smile instantly disappeared as he signaled his disapproval.  

Excuse me sir, but this IS 2022. We're NOT living in the 50's anymore. I have nicely groomed facial hair. That's NOT a bad thing. It's NOT rebellious. It DOESN'T make me a bad person. 

But there are some positive things here as well. Obviously there is beautiful architecture and also some very kind and friendly  people who seem to care about others and that's a good thing 👍.

I'd give it more stars 🌟 if they could do something about the homeless unbeliever who hangs out during mass. I would welcome an unbeliever for sure if they're not a jerk but if they're going to be a jerk and I mean they use the mass for their own self-serving purposes having nothing to do with believing in Jesus Christ. 

This guy is a real jerk. He hangs out by the door and glares at you if he doesn't approve of you to such an extent that I WON'T go there anymore IF he's there. So I'll stop in every year and see if he's still there and IF he is I wait another year. He is definitely an unbeliever but the priests allow him to be the boss in the back 👎. 

This time I've been gone for two years because of covid and I just came back again today 12/26/21 & he actually saw me coming and stood in front of the door like he was the bouncer or something. So I did an about-face and walked back to my car and drove off.  I'll go to St Martin of Tours  ⛪ instead. & I can assure you I'm not the only one he drives away.

Nice church building but I actually liked the old church better -felt more normal. This one has more of that wealthy appeal to it I suppose.  There's some occasional good stuff here but every now and then you'll meet some snobbery and then you also have the neurotics here.

One lady at daily mass always says the same thing asking for prayer for the "Woodward and Bernstein family"  I mean she's been doing this for years- it's a little weird and even selfish if you're just praying for your own family or whoever the  two families are- doesn't seem like it's a special emergency request anymore if it's been going on for years. 

And when she says Woodward and Bernstein I think of the Washington Post Watergate thing -what does that have to do with 2021  unless there's another coincidental two families of the same name in the area with special prayer needs - but this has been going on for years. Or is this some kind of joke? Or is she mentally ill ?

⛪ one thing that bothers me is when parishioners come in late for whatever reason- maybe it's not their fault - maybe they got caught in traffic or  whatever ; but at least in such cases DON'T come all the way up to the front with such audacity.  just sit in the back.

 Today a couple came in AFTER the homily was finished (which is pretty late) they had the arrogance to sit in front of me. it's sort of like they insert themselves into a story that they weren't part of from the beginning.  It feels rude.

 It happens to everybody -arriving late for whatever reason & it's just plain decency to sit in the back in such cases.

9/5/21 Review of St Ann Cathedral, Great Falls MT

Unfortunately, not a very good experience as I was just passing through town I was here on Sunday morning so  i went  to St Anne's cathedral for noon service. Part of the problem is that here in Great Falls I don't find regular internet connection on my phone so I couldn't easily check the times of mass and so it was taking me awhile to find a place just to figure out the time for Catholic mass and then figure out where Saint Anne's Church is. 

 Beautiful ⛪ inside but I was a few minutes late & the black guy there who apparently is some kind of usher chided me for being late and then during the offering time he kind of gave me a disapproving side eye for not putting any money in the plate.  

I'm a traveler so I've always been under the impression by most churches if you're not a regular attendee you're not really expected to be putting money in the offering plate given the expenses it takes just to be traveling all the time. & I'm NOT a millionaire. I do have a budget.

 So I just kind of felt bad about the experience & the atmosphere and I left a little early and probably won't be back there for sometime 😞. By the way a lady in shorts came in after me and I didn't notice the black guy  showing any disapproval towards her. Why picking only on me ?

re Rev Quan Tran : The  Asian priest -I think he's Vietnamese-  who just wrote a book about imitating Mother Mary,  is actually being a little bit cocky and condescending towards the audience every time he does a homily. It does NOT feel very spiritual.  

It feels like he's talking down to us - even disrespecting us. I personally also went to Seminary - even though I'm not a priest . I have a masters degree and I don't really like being talked down to when I am at church like he's talking to kids . And he's also taking advantage of the obligatory respect many parishioners give the priest- sometimes over-the-top respect. 

I've also written books, and it's nice to be happy about having written a book, but it seems like every single homily he's boasting about it- not just talking about it . He's boasting & bragging which is not a characteristic of being in the spirit but a  characteristic of being in the flesh.  

So let us pray for this priest to tone it DOWN a little bit & respect the audience as he wants to be respected likewise. If he doesn't feel comfortable here, maybe he'd be better off with a Vietnamese congregation such as at Holy Spirit or Westminster. 

Now I notice he's got a J.D. as well. 

He's over-qualified & bored with us & is starting to be abusive & taunting us.  Give him some new challenges .
